A Gestalt Coaching Primer The Path Toward Awareness IQ eBook Dr Dorothy E Siminovitch MCC Reviews

The field of Gestalt has so much to bring to the field of coaching and Dorothy has created an important link for us -- a true contribution to all coaches. Her work and writing is both subtle and powerfully direct and her language draws us into the Gestalt perspective -- from exploring the 'inward unwelt' to the important concept of 'contact' -- we continually see the power and connection of key Gestalt concepts and our work in coaching. Her in-depth treatment of presence as a 'being' intervention is one of many highlights in this book. Her emphasis on the all important areas of resistance, presence and experiments has such relevance for any coach. Kudos to Dr. Siminovitch for this noteworthy contribution to the field!
High praise for “A Gestalt Coaching Primer- the Path Toward Awareness IQ”. Siminovitch has taken the complex world of Gestalt business theory and created a true primer. Her clear and accessible writing speaks to a wide audience. Whether you are well versed in Gestalt principles or a newcomer, this book has the uncanny ability to meet you where you are, then bring you to a deeper understanding of the methodology. The beauty of the book is that it outlines the concepts in a way that you can immediately incorporate them into your daily practice. A consummate Gestalt coach and practitioner, Siminovitch has taken her life work and created a vehicle where she accompanies you along the path of awareness of self and others. A timely and important read.
I have been in the Information Technology (IT) field for over 40 years. As I am reading through these coaching concepts, I am realizing how much the Sense of Self and the Awareness IQ can be relevant to IT program and project management. Successful teams are made up of unique individuals each with distinctive needs. To be aware of and develop people and their needs and to fulfill individual goals all the while striving to successfully accomplish the desired project objectives is a daily challenge. Dr. Siminovitch has eloquently described the Gestalt Coaching practices and competencies so that they can be interpreted for any field and any career.
Any book that offers the opportunity to understand the “pragmatics of magic” has got my attention from the get go. And that’s precisely what Dorothy Siminovitch’s new tour de force “A Gestalt Coaching Primer” offers in its introduction - and then masterfully delivers in the chapters that follow.

For those of us who aren’t intimately familiar with the Gestalt, the book offers a primer on the up to date theory of this tradition, while powerfully communicating the richness of its insights and inspiration for coaching. I was especially reminded of the power of paying lots of attention to the many non-verbal aspects of our interactions, and to take responsibility for our unavoidable impact on those we support. I will be a better coach for this. A Gestalt Coaching Primer is chockful of useful frameworks, practical tools and tips to put into practice tomorrow. It will challenge and help you to be more aware of your potential impact and the many tools you can apply to develop a more effective coaching practice. Indeed, the book will provide tremendous value to anyone who work with and supports others, including consultants, team leaders and managers.
This is a long awaited book by a master practitioner, conceptualizer and pioneer of adapting the Gestalt approach to coaching. I got my copy a few days ago and already finished reading and here are my impressions (disclaimer I co-lead with Dorothy in the Gestalt Coaching Program in which we are partners, yet but my review below does not depend on my personal relationship with her but my actual experience of the book as a Gestalt practitioner and trainer)...

1. Coaching has grown as a field of and support to human and organizational development because of its positive and strengths-based approach, and despite its lack of a strong conceptual and research based foundation. Many coaching methods today appear as collections of intervention methods taken out of context and conceptual integrity of the approaches they are created in. Gestalt Approach, and Dr. Siminovitch's presentation of the art, comes in as a relief, and as an integral theory and philosophy of human behavior and development. The book presents not only the how of coaching interventions, as many other books do, but also the why of it. Dorothy presents how we, as coaches and Gestalt practitioners "understand" and assess a client system in terms of movement and blockage, and how we support the system as "awareness agents" (and not change agents) to become aware and choiceful in terms of moving past blocks and habitual patterns to satisfaction of needs and wants. In this respect, this book will be helpful to any coach educated in any approach to have a better understanding of why and how their preferred intervention method works, and how they can be more artful in applying those.

2. I found the chapter on Presence and Dorothy's approach to it very timely and impactful. Today, it is all about presence, may it be leadership presence, personal presence or presence in the social media. Yet, many people are trained NOT to be present, not to embody their presence, hide in their thoughts and minds, and not to show up in ways that are bold, shining and create impact. We are taught to fit in, and after a certain age, we are told to show up and be present. Dorothy has actually created an approach on how to embody your presence and develop it without having to "fake" it. This chapter by itself is very valuable and should be a must read to any person in leadership role.

3. Gestalt approach is highly experiential, alive, in the moment, existential, embodied, exciting. Yet with a few exceptions, nearly all writing on the approach, although intellectually stimulating, is extremely academic, cognitively challenging, not intuitive, even dull, and highly inaccessible to the people who are not already experientially trained in the approach. Dorothy has definitely made the approach highly understandable and readable for the people who are in and out of the field. She has been able to convey the essence of the approach through written word, while not jeopardizing the conceptual vigorousness of Gestalt. She has been able to demonstrate the impactfulness while also talking about the solid theoretical ground, which is not a small feat.

4. Dorothy is a ambassador in many meanings of the word, having worked in many different cultures and bringing different elements of each culture she is exposed to the ones she finds herself in. This book serves the same purpose, as she brings Gestalt to Coaching and Coaching to Gestalt. The book successfully brings together the highly experiential, pragmatic and emotionally impactful tools, techniques, and concepts of the Gestalt approach and the pragmatic, solution and progress oriented world of coaching, especially as defined by the International Coach Federation. Dorothy, as the Director of Training of one of the ICF-Accreditted coach training programs, has been able to bridge the gap and has shown how the Gestalt approach is an extremely effective and impactful way of bringing ICF competencies to life and create lasting change in our clients.

I highly recommend A Gestalt Coaching Primer to all coaches, leaders and Gestalt practitioners.
