Once Upon a Scandal The Scandal Series Delilah Marvelle 9780373775453 Books

Wow! If I could have given Once Upon a Scandal more stars I would have. Delilah Marvelle is certainly becoming my favorite historical novelist and I've read hundreds of books in the last three or four years . . . many of them historical. I won't reiterate the plot, it has already been covered. This is a fast-moving story with great main and secondary characters, moving encounters and above all else beautiful love. Jonathan was a fantastic hero with undying love that any woman would love to have and Victoria becomes a wonderfully loving strong heroin. Color me simple if you like: I thought this was a far better story than the original Grimm version or any other version (see writer's comment above under editorial reviews). I tend to read and re-read writers whose stories move me emotionally in more ways than one and this story delivers highly-packed emotions . . . I laughed, I cried and more importantly I loved. Thanks, Delilah, for another heart-warming novel which will become a part of my library, one I'll enjoy reading time and again. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your novels that I haven't already enjoyed.

Once Upon a Scandal The Scandal Series Delilah Marvelle 9780373775453 Books Reviews

This is not your usual 'hearts and roses' historical romance. It has some very adult themes including male prostitution and death by syphilis. Jonathan Pierce Thatcher, Viscount Remington has loved Lady Victoria Jane Emerson all his adult life. But he was torn away from her in such a way that she has hated him ever since. But life is good and has given him a second chance to win her heart. Nevertheless, he has to over come many challenges before he can make her his own, not least his own heart breaking past.

I liked this book but didn't love it. What I liked was that it was different - we were taken to Venice which makes a very nice change to Paris and London. I enjoyed the challenges that Marvelle threw in the way of the hero and heroine. But in the end, the book wasn't quite intense enough to really suck me in and wring me out with emotion.

I cannot quite put my finger on why I didn't love this book. I think it was because Jonathan was a tad too sweet for my liking and the ending was too pat. I couldn't quite understand why Victoria's father would reverse his decision about Jonathan and support his claim for Victoria's hand. I don't know how Jonathan could say Victoria's father was the best man he had ever known when the chap was dying of syphilis. And my greatest gripe was the scene in the carriage which felt extremely clumsy and disjointed, not at all erotic.

All in all, I would recommend this book and I am definitely interested in reading the next book in the series The Perfect Scandal (Hqn). But it is not a book I would read again or keep.
Enjoyed the entire series.will order again to complete other incomplete series.order was on time of delivery date.not an eBook or ereader at this time..
this book was a great spin on cinderella, if u're a feminist then i would suggest this version of the tale and not disney's. a bit slow at the start, but perserverance is the key and from about 1/4 of the way in the novel is excellent
Interesting story and very believable.
Since other reviewers have summed up the plot, I won't do so here. Jonathan, the hero of this book, was a true delight. An unabashed romantic, he made me and the heroine believe in true, lasting love. He's one of the best heroes I've seen in a romance--ever. He's not a jerk and he doesn't hide his feelings. When he does hide something from the heroine, it truly is to protect her, not because it's convenient to the plot.

I also liked Victoria, the heroine. She's going through a terrible tragedy (the slow loss of her father due to madness) and even though Jonathan has broken her heart, she eventually and realistically comes to forgive him and embrace his love. She's no milquetoast heroine, but neither is she annoyingly "spunky" or a big pain in the butt just because she needs to give the hero a hard time to service the plot. She has good reasons for how she reacts and what she does, and I found her to be one of the more relatable and enjoyable heroines I've read in a long time (ditto for the heroine of the previous book, "Prelude to a Scandal"). Ms. Marvelle has a real talent for creating interesting and challenging heroines who you want to root for instead of groan at.

I greatly enjoyed the previous book ("Prelude to a Scandal"); those who have read it may be expecting the same level and amount of sensuality. This book focuses more on the romance than the sex, but there are several heated scenes between the hero and heroine. (The second one, in a carriage, is delightfully audacious and will make you smile as well as fan yourself.)

I have a quibble or two with the book. Near the end, there is a terrifying scene involving Victoria. Although the scene is very well written and made me shudder (I literally felt what the heroine was feeling, so brava to Ms. Marvelle!), it comes about through an incredible coincidence that I didn't buy. I can think of other ways this scene could have come about (though probably not in the chosen setting) that would have arisen naturally out of the plot.

Additionally, the part of the plot where Victoria must choose from three suitors seemed far-fetched (would a father really force his daughter to marry this way?), but I gave Ms. Marvelle the benefit of the doubt, and the resulting scenes were well-written and quite tender, including one between Victoria and one of the other suitors. What could have been a perfunctory scene showing why this other man was clearly inferior and not right for her was instead poignant and heartfelt. Even though Victoria chose Jonathan, you have the sense that the man she didn't choose would have made a decent and loving husband nevertheless. I applaud Ms. Marvelle for not taking the easy way out with this scene and this character.

Overall, I loved this book--it was another that I couldn't put down and finished in less than two days. I can't wait to dive into the next one in the series ("The Perfect Scandal"). Ms. Marvelle continues to push the boundaries of historical romance by giving us atypical heroes, heroines, and storylines that liven up the genre and pleasingly defy reader expectations.
I loved the premise of the story and the honesty of the writing kept me entertained. I wasn't able to put the book because I had to find out what came next. The hero and heroine went through A LOT to get to their happily ever after and as a reader was disappointed in the payoff. Instead of focusing on the culmination of their love affair and how it transpired, it felt like something dramatic had to occur for this to happen. The whole dual aspect for me was annoying as it took away from the journey which I very much enjoyed. The ending seemed heavy handed and stunted which was not the style used throughout the book. It was abrupt and was in my opinion not true to the story or the characters. Usually I like to come away from reading a book with a sense of completion that makes me happy that I read it. This ending made me go "huh" and left me hanging.
