I love, love, love this author. I don't write reviews but I honestly don't think this author can be praised enough. Her talent is raw and unmeasured. I notice some have pointed out that the editing can be tighter, while I understand from where those views are coming, I would take this authors stories as is any day over most of the well edited stories I have read by other authors. The best way to describe the feeling I get when I read her work is: home. I feel completely relaxed and ready for the journey on which she takes me. Although she sometimes shocks my senses and evokes emotions and connections to characters with whom I could never imagine myself identifying, I am content. There is an undeniable familiarity in which she writes that welcomes you and makes you feel warm inside. I have no words. Thank you for writing.Tags : Adaptation: book I - Kindle edition by Pepper Pace, J. J. Murray. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Adaptation book I eBook Pepper Pace J J Murray Reviews
To begin, I am now an avid 'stalker' Pepper Pace fan, straight up, this author knows how to make a 'Blob' (which all I can think of is the movie 'Beware of the Blob' where that blob was straight up gross), amenable enough to make you fall in love with the character. Again, I asked how does an author take a `Blob' and make it likeable, even endearing....damned if I know, but Pepper did... and I took that leap of faith and bought because I have read some of her past books. I honestly could not see how she would make this work, smh, but she sure did, and has me sold on this story. And I have to say, I am NOT disappointed!
When I first started reading the book, I was like this is not going to go over well, I am not going to enjoy this story... but I DID enjoy it.
I did not know this author Octavia Butler but it's so nice to see Pepper Pace pay tribute or homage to this author who I found out after some research was one of the authors you can say, was one of the authors who truly paved the way for science fiction and multicultural romance. UTTER RESPECT!
I thought I would look up the true meaning of the word, ad*ap*ta*tion - a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
It occurs when natural selection acts on a heritable trait, or characteristic, that allows an individual to better survive in its environment. Organisms with such a trait are more likely to thrive and reproduce in that environment and pass the beneficial trait on. Even simple organisms must be adapted in many ways, including structure, physiology, and genetics; movement or dispersal; means of defense and attack; and reproduction and development. To be useful, adaptations must often occur simultaneously in different parts of the body. Bilal does exactly this for his survival and what he becomes to his family.
This book should be adapted and made into a movie (pun intended). This book is about racism with real race issues with species from another planet, redemption, and as the story builds showing the main characters learning to accept, forgiveness, respect, laughter, and learning to move on and live again, growing into lovable and endearing characters.
I personally think that all of the above characters and any further characters will have to do nothing but keep adapting in order for them all to survive. This is one of those books that honestly should be made into a movie, for the very reason it is so big a story it is beyond just a book, and it would be well received with rave reviews, it is that engrossing. Smh, Pepper Pace takes you there with this story, she really knows how to take characters such as these and make them endearing, to the point you are routing for them all, from Carmella, Bilal, Baby Raj, Wolf, Girl and Lil Wolf. Each character not wasted, but rather brought in to serve a purpose.
I love all the characters in this story. From Carmella's resourcefulness and her familial relationship with the wolves, to Bilal learning to accept his race for what it is and learning to love who he was as an alien and loving and accepting his differences as a human being, to Raj their baby so lovably cute and perceptive, Ooooo I love baby Raj, sorry had to say that. The aliens point of views, everything made sense and was so descriptive, it was like viewing a movie.
How would you behave and how would you adapt if for 10 years you see no other human beings? You watch whatever animals or man around become violent and destructive to one another. Man is high on the food chain once again and you are a woman alone. Take that and run with it, all I can say is WOW! At this point I think this author can make you feel empathy for a roach or a `snake' my worst enemy *shuddering here*.
This is certainly not your typical IR romance, Pepper steps outside of the box and goes truly SCI FI, comes at it maybe sideways or backwards and then added in the romance, but she did it with flair and keeps you engrossed in the story. And as one of the other reviewers said you really have to allow yourself to accept and embrace the aliens as written via Peppers views, and I kid you not you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
I think that all species that lives on this planet, has been and will always continue to keep adapting in order for us to survive as a species.
Yes there were editing errors, but to me they were so minor, it did not matter, nor detract from the story. You will be so caught up and riveted in the story, nothing but the story matters. The progression of this book everything just fits in, in a timely fashion to the point where you can see yourself in those instances being those characters and reacting just like the characters did. This book has such amazing details and visual effects, you see everything unveiling right before your eyes, again movie, hint.. hint.... a must read or see...
My only con
I am definitely not a fan of reading books with a continuation part to it, not unless it is already written, but if you have read her book `BEAST', you know why I took a chance on Pepper's book Adaptation Book 1. Not happy about it, but for the first time I am willing to do it this once.
... because I am always left frothing at the mouth for the rest of the story, and wondering when is the rest of it going to be out... I really don't like that. I would not mind so much if the 2nd or last part was sold as a bundle or was readily available for me to purchase, but this is not, because I searched everywhere looking for it. And usually, at this point I end it in my head and don't bother finding out the rest of the story, and saying to hell with it. But, I am not, well let's just say cannot, because Pepper Pace has me so damned hooked on this story. I really want or should I say need to see and read the next book part 2 because Pepper Pace really has me so entrenched in the story like that movie 'She's Gotta have it'.
Suffice it to say, I'm hooked and waiting... with baited breath.... so Pepper Pace please hurry up with my story Adaptation Book 2, fair warning, I am going to stalk the internet for it.
GROUP PROS We can all stalk Pepper Pace TOGETHER for Book 2. Cause I am foaming at the mouth for my Book 2..... Pepper please!!
THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ... only problem you will be like me stalking Pepper Pace for the rest....
Thank you
After the majority of humans are wiped out by a pandemic that was unintentionally caused by peaceful aliens, Carmella finds herself alone and grieving the loved ones she lost. When the rest of the human survivors are taken to another planet, Carmella hides away determined to live out her life on Earth. It is a lonely life even with her wolf beside her.
Bilal is a Centaurian but inside he feels like a human. His friends are human and he calls Earth his home. He is shunned by his own kind and spends his time studying Earth and humans. He is interested in Carmella and watches her long before she sees him. Due to her past she is not interested in learning to know him. He is the enemy who destroyed her family.
Bilal sees how his people ruined her life and tries to right the wrong by impregnating her with his Alien DNA.
Forget what you've ever learned about aliens from other books because this is totally unique and interesting and well written and you won't want it to end. Loved how strong she is. Loved how vulnerable his is.
This book was amazing. I have been a fan of Pepper Pace and have read every one of her books. As an author Ms. Pace tackles issues such as disabilities, mixed ethnicity, racism and drugs in a refreshing point of view. This book however brought in so many elements on a different plane.
The pros The amazing storyline.
The issues surrounding the main characters (Carmella and Bilal) are interesting to say the least. Carmella is a woman who has lost everything (her husband, her toddler son, relatives and friends due to the Centaurian species. Earthlings have been removed from Earth and taken to another planet called Earth 2. Can Carmella forgive the Centaurians for chaos they have caused? Can she look beyond the hatred and see Bilal as an individual especially after he does the unthinkable?
Bilal was a born on the mothership. His views do not reflect those of his race. He identifies with the humans and sees them as friends and equals. He experiments with mind altering plants, is an explorer and craves the this that humans have. After inadvertently coming in contact with Carmella he does the unthinkable. Can Carmella, Raj, Lawrence, his parents and his race forgive him in the end? Will Bilal be able to stay with Carmella and Raj on Earth?
The cons This story does have some spelling errors. I however was willing to overlook them due to beautiful story unfolding before my eyes.
