Night Angel Trilogy The Way of Shadows / Shadow Edge / Beyond the Shadows Brent Weeks 9781607513513 Books

Saw this trilogy during a trip to the bookstore and purchased this slip edition for less than $5.00 from a third-party seller here on Amazon, and, arriving in perfect condition, I couldn't be more satisfied. The neat cover art gives the books an Assassins Creed vibe and was what compelled my curiosity to give this series a chance in the first place, but I kept my expectations low because the summary in the product description was too short and simple to arouse much interest (and also because, personally, after enjoying another brilliant trilogy so much, I haven't found any other works of fiction I've read after it to match its excitement). However, that was not the case with the Night Angel Trilogy. First of all, the author did an excellent job creating an interesting setting and including magic in the plot without being cliche (think Tolkien) about it. While all three of the books in the trilogy numbers more than 600 pages long, the plot is well-crafted and moves at a fast pace, and is worth the time to get through, with plenty of action to keep you up at night that builds up as each book go along in the most outstanding way. There are loads of characters with a lot of side stories, but they all fall into place with each other without losing any focus on the protagonist or the plot itself, while the characters are interesting and well thought out. However, I would NOT recommend this for the under-18 age group or for the particularly sensitive -as in the description, the main character is an assassin, so there is a lot of violence and murder to be expected, with the details included; there is also violence against children, sex scenes and innuendo, rape, and other unpleasant topics, while the protagonists (who are not exactly what one would consider "good" people) are only thus because the antagonists are much worse in comparison if not irredeemably evil. Despite the grit, though, the story-line is well-written and difficult to single out any excellent area, including the number of character development. All of the characters are flawed -some horribly, and hold varying degrees of personal trauma, though their individual quirks are written with depth, while the prime characters all gradually become stronger as the series goes on, and only because the love and hope of their friends kept them all from getting lost in the darker aspects of their personalities and actions and becoming monsters. While this overall series is complex and dark, the ultimate purpose of it is (to quote the author in an interview in the extra pages in Book One) finding the light after fighting to escape the darkness, starting out "in a place that's dark and gritty because without that, light and peace are meaningless, worthless, boring" -and you'll find yourself fully agreeing with that after finishing the series, despite what I thought was a bittersweet ending for the main character. All in all, the trilogy as a whole is essentially a story about love and hope and what makes us human, as well as about how much we are willing to sacrifice for what we need to do to survive and perhaps triumph in a broken world or for who we love. It's hard to put into words how entertaining and engaging I found this trilogy, and was kind of disappointed that it ended. Overall, I rate this among my favorite works of fiction, and look forward to reading more from the author.

Night Angel Trilogy The Way of Shadows / Shadow Edge / Beyond the Shadows Brent Weeks 9781607513513 Books Reviews

Wow this is definitely one of my new favorite authors. I fell in love with the characters, the plot kept me hooked with evenings spent reading way past when I planned to stop. Each chapter connects effortlessly to the next with a main character who you'll fall in love with as he struggles and triumphs in a difficult world. I just couldn't get enough of it. If you enjoy authors like Bradon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss, I highly recommend adding Brent Weeks to your list, you will love this series! Prepare to devote the next few weeks of your life to this series depending on long it takes you to read, because you'll be reading this as much as you can!
I had never heard of this author but the description and the name of the books lured me in so much, I knew I had to buy the book. And I am so very glad I did.
This is not your typical fantasy. There are no elves, or dwarves, or any Tolkienish creatures, but it's full of other wonderful things too. It's a real dark fantasy, but I mean that in a very good way. It's more aimed at young adults and adults rather than pre-teens and children, though. There are tough parts that'll make you weak inside, there are action-packed happenings that'll leave your heart racing, and emotional parts that'll make you ache and mourn inside.
One of my favorite books, and it's totally worth the money to buy it 3 in 1, to just hop right into the next book without much waiting.

I bought this used, and am very happy. No visible signs of misuse, no torn or written-on pages, everything was stellar. Definetly recommended.
I'm a casual reader. To me, the first book was gripping and a whole host of other superlatives, but as the storyline and universe expanded in the second and third books, I found that the pace suffered in favor of world building. Some folks might enjoy that—it just wasn't right for me personally, especially after such an awesome book one.

My main complaint I thought the ending of the trilogy was horrible in particular. It felt rushed and cliched, even bordering on outright lame, for lack of a better term.
I have really enjoyed reading several of Brent Week's series. This and the Lightbringer are both my favorite two though. I'd highly recommend his works to anyone who likes fantasy/adventure novels.

I did take off 2 stars for the condition this book arrived in though. I bought it new and the Prime package it arrived in was undamaged. However, the cover was seriously damaged and the spine was broken in several places. Clearly this "new" purchase was actually a well worn and used book. Disappointed in the shipping, but did not give me the "packaging/seller feedback" option so I'm hitting the vendor here unfortunately.
This is a really fantastic, but also exceptionally dark, series of novels. It's a series that delves into shadowy and potentially unpleasant topics like murder for hire, rape, violence between and upon children, and more. It's not light-hearted series, nor one that shies away from showing ugly realities. That being said, it's a thrilling read with lots of action, deep characters, and a very interesting story throughout. It's not a story of black and white, but a story of grey, darker grey, and the deepest black. This omnibus edition is a huge book, coming in at more than 1200 pages, and is a really good value for the price when you consider both the length as well as the quality of the story.
