The story would have been okay if the characters didn't have moments of complete mental trepanation.

The heroine was particularly irritating. Strong women wedded to the enemy isn't exactly a new idea, but while i've seen stupid, this character seems to take it to infinity and beyond. to spoil some: someone tries to kill her husband, so she decides to go alone to confront the person she thinks did it. in their house. With their clan members. All alone. no one knows that's where she went.

obviously she is extremely surprised he just had his men disarm her and kidnap her. I'm not saying the hero didn't have his good moments of dumb, but if it hadn't been for her constant hissy fits, the book would have been half as long an provably far more easier to get don one's throat.

The writing isn't bad, and the story isn't terrible, but the characters are.

Highland Warrior Connie Mason 9780843957440 Books Reviews

Another great book by Connie Mason. As with most of her books I really enjoyed this one. It's a good quick read that you want to finish in one day. Ross is a great guy. Even though he doesn't want to marry Gillian he says he will be faithful to her. Oh course no one is perfect so he does have his faults, like not listening to her. Gillian was trained to fight with a sword. She thinks she can beat any man in a fight, even though she can not. She is a little stubborn, head strong, and doesn't listen, but I liked her character. You have the bad guy, the ex mistress, and some times the clan interfering in their relationship.

Sex content is high.
I really enjoyed every page of this book. Couldn't put this one down. All of the characters were likeable, except the villain of course.

Gillian has known for years that she would marry a cheiftan, an ally to her clan. But just before the betrothal is to be finalized, her father betroths her to an enemy of her clan, a Laird, in a pact to end a clan war that has claimed so many lives, including two of his sons.

With the h/h mistrusting each other, taught from birth to hate each others clans, an enemy that doesn't want them to be together, and another enemy that does not want the clan war to end.....

This book was good enough to keep me turning pages...yet, I didn't want it to end.

Will I read this one again? Most definitely.
But I had some real problems with this book.
First of all, hot headed does not have to mean brutally stupid. In a land and time where one false move could and would be the end of you, to ignore all signs and good advice would be detrimental to your health. If someone is giving you consistently good advice and predictions that come true, you don't call them stupid and crazy and tell them to get out of your sight all the time.
You're normally more observant. To live for any length of time you have to be somewhat aware. The hero in this book most decidedly wasn't. The only advice he followed was that of his single uncle and he took really bad relationship advice from him.
Wives are not boomerangs, and should not be treated as such. You cannot throw them away one week, retrieve them, and then toss them away again the next week. And while she came equipped with her own neurosis, one could forgive her problems with the revolving door her silly husband had her spinning in.
Research rocks---for instance, crackers wouldn't be invented for another 300 years. And they weren't called crackers.
So, I had problems with this book. I realize everyone fell in love with the hero, and while I do like big buffed men, I do like them to be able to rub two brain cells together...so for me, this was a 4 roller---which means I was rolling my eyes at least four times a chapter.
There was a lot I liked about this story. Although I felt some characters needed to be a bit more fleshed out. The H/h get married to put an end to a long feud between their clans. There are a lot of twist and turns in this one. She is determined to never love him. She is interested in marrying someone else. He has a former leman who keeps interfering in the relationship. Mix in an old seer who fortells things in such a way that the meaning is never clear. I found that somewhat comical. Mix in plenty of fighting and of course sex, and you have a fairly entertaining read.
Many times while reading this book I did not like either the heroine Gillian or the hero Ross. I think what kept me interested the book was definitely a good read with some of the descriptions of the Scottish highlands, clans and the feuding between the clans. As the story progressed I ended up liking Gillian due to Gizela, Hanna and Alice a few of the minor characters that were in the story who helped me understand Gillian’s personality a little better. I was however disappointed with the physical descriptions of Gillian whose body seemed almost manly but was trapped in a woman’s body. Ross started out as a good guy and I liked his character at first but he constantly doubted Gillian throughout the story which irritated me to no end and I felt he at least needed to listen to Gillian more than what everyone else was telling him.
There was one discrepancy that really bothered me. Now I am usually not a stickler for a fictional medieval romance novel to follow the time exactly but when Ross begs Gizela that he wants no more laudanum this made no sense. The time of the story is 1415 laudanum was not invented until 1527 and I thought maybe I had read it wrong or maybe Ms. Connie Mason meant another drug related to laudanum like opium perhaps? Also another thing that bothered me was one of the minor characters changed names she went from Eileen to Elaine that I couldn’t figure out who she was supposed to be. Despite all of this I rated the book four stars anyway. I did enjoy reading the story and how Ms. Mason is able to write a fascinating book with some nice characters even though they had flaws and at times I didn’t like them. Most of the characters including the villains and the minor characters had great depth to them. Nonetheless I will read another book from Ms. Mason.
The story would have been okay if the characters didn't have moments of complete mental trepanation.

The heroine was particularly irritating. Strong women wedded to the enemy isn't exactly a new idea, but while i've seen stupid, this character seems to take it to infinity and beyond. to spoil some someone tries to kill her husband, so she decides to go alone to confront the person she thinks did it. in their house.
